Beautiful From A Distance I’ve had crushes, I’ve held grudges, sometimes they had the same subject They’re so easy on the eyes and hard on the heart This Cassandra, she was one who prophesied a fiery doom I should have seen it, I should have seen it all along. (chorus:) She was born on Halloween, Orange, black and green She’s a little off is what I mean, as if in a dream And she’s so beautiful from a distance Came out of the hills and hollows, Songs to sing and pills to swallow They’re so easy to come by and hard to come off Gilded Lilly they like to call her, West Virginia, mountain mama But there’s no mountain to go home to anymore. (2nd chorus) Wont say what she means, never as it seems Just a little off is what I mean, as if in a dream And it’s so beautiful from a distance Something in her eyes, welling up inside Somewhere between laughing and crying, living and dying And it’s so beautiful from a distance (Instrumental break) She knows love and she knows murder, she will bring you one or the other Should have seen it, I should have seen it all along. (repeat 2nd chorus)

Carbondale 03:45
Carbondale I’m going to take you out of Carbondale You don’t need to be there anymore And as far as I can see there aint a thing for you to be Hanging around in southern Illinois (Chorus:) Misty morning, the sun is rising and we’re eastward bound Burning daylight along the highway let the miles role out, Let the mile roll out. We’ll make a quick stop off in Bowling Green Top off the tank maybe get a bite And as nice as it may be there’s nothing there for you and me Just like it was in southern Illinois So we’ll drive to that mountain top in east Tennessee Feel the son set at our backs And in the fading light and the pines we’ll look out over Carolina Not sure where we are going or why. (2nd chorus) Early evening, the moon is shining and we’re eastward bound Catching our third wind along the highway As the miles roll out, let the mile roll out. We’re going make it down to the sea. Stand on the beach in the predawn night And in the spill of the milky way just before the break of day Looks just the same in southern Illinois (3rd chorus) Misty morning, the sun is rising and the tide rolls out We’re not homesick, we’re just heartbroken But that’s fading now, yes that feelings fading now. We’ll never go back to Carbondale. We don’t need to be there anymore. And as far as I can see there’s nothing left for you and me Hanging around in southern Illinois Hanging around in southern Illinois

Secret (no one’s keeping) She’s like a secret no ones really keeping She’s like a freight train. Yeah, she’s like a freight train rolling through this city She’s like a hurricane. And when she gives up her heart she stops what she starts And when she gets what she wants she pulls it apart Scatters the pieces, taken by the breezes, goodbye… He’s been mistreated, pushed around and cheated on. He wants a sure thing. Want’s to be needed, he’s begging and he’s pleading for it But he’d take anything. And when he gives her his time she aint buying that line And when she needs to survive, he’s there everytime With what she’s needing. Doing her wrong by treating her right. (Chorus) This Saturday night fantasy died but give it another week Another Saturday night will bring that dream back to life. She’s like a thought that everyone is thinking But they wont say anything Her heart is bleeding, it’s right out on her sleeve She’s got it wrapped up in cellophane And when she rolls around town she shows it around When someone tosses it down he picks it up off the ground Checks if it’s beating and dusts it off the best that he can. (2nd chorus) This Saturday night, it can’t be revived once it’s run out of steam And she cant move on now that her fantasy died.

The Shopkeeper Oh sweetness, Oh sweetness now dry all your tears And don’t waste your water over dead pistoliers. They come down from the canyons to sit in saloons And there’ll be a dozen more here by tomorrow afternoon. The man who shot your lover has gone on the train And the card cheats and cowboys are back at their drink They’ve done took his pistols, his belt and his boots And what little’s left of him, I guess, belongs to you (Chorus) ‘cause bullets break windows if you’re lucky they make widows when you’re not and I aint one of your hot headed flunkies no, I just keep the shop. (instrumental) oh lady, of lady I’m not a fighting man and I make my living with my back and my hands and I don’t rush to anger, I aint quick to offend and I will still be here when they all meet their end yes, they’ll die in the saddle just like they die in the streets they die from the cold and they die from the heat but I live here in quiet and I work here in peace and I wonder if you’d like to live here with me. (2nd chorus) ‘cause bullets break windows if you’re lucky they make widows if you’re not so forget every one of those hot headed flunkies and help me keep the shop. So lady, oh lady, let go of your fighting man For he is as dead as the rock and the sand We’ll bury his body, put a maker on his grave And you will forget him in a couple of days (repeat 2nd chorus)

Sun Dress 04:06
Sun Dress Late summer and the heat is pressing down Like a blanket or a shroud over a hazy town. Siesta and the sweat is on the brow All you do is lay around and listen to the insects Singing in the tall grass. Watch a girl walk by in her sun dress. A heartbreaker, going out for the night As the street lights come alive and shine their yellow light A tearjerker, yeah it almost made you cry Though you cant say exactly why Just something about the insects singing in the tall grass And a girl walking by in her sun dress (chorus) Not exactly lonely but you’re missing something you can feel it’s not there Catch yourself crying, catch yourself trying not to try so hard now. (instrumental) (repeat chorus) A heartbreaker can be heartbroken too But it wont be over you You’re more like an insect buzzing through her tall grass To that girl walking by in her
